Symantec adds new security features to Altiris line Print E-mail
Sept 17 -- Symantec Corp. announced last week the integration of its endpoint management portfolio, to provide its customers with solutions to automate management requirements, and to help reduce the cost of owning endpoint devices. Symantec is also taking steps to secure the endpoint with the release of Altiris Privilege Management Essentials, to help customers control the desktop, while keeping employees productive through better application and password management, Symantec said.

Symantec had recognized the growing interdependence between security and effective management of data and systems, the company said. Symantec is able to provide security and management solutions for complex data center environment to the smallest handheld computing device, the company said. The Altiris business unit of Symantec helps customers gain confidence and efficiencies through automated management and protection of data at the endpoint, Symantec of Cupertino, California added.

Symantec is a provider of infrastructure software, which enables businesses and consumers to have confidence in a connected world. The company helps customers protect their infrastructure, information and interactions by delivering software and services that address risks to security, availability, compliance and performance, Symantec said.

Symantec has established its endpoint management strategy to provide customers with best solutions for their management needs, the company said. Symantec has, firstly, delivered support for Ghost Solution Suite from Altiris Deployment Solution for comprehensive software management, the company said. Symantec will secondly offer pcAnywhere going forward as its preferred remote control solution, and will integrate pcAnywhere with the Altiris management platform, it said. Symantec has thirdly discontinued development of its LiveState Delivery product, and provided current customers with a migration path to Altiris Client Management Suite, the company added.

With the combination of Ghost Solution Suite and the Altiris product portfolio, Symantec provides customers of all sizes with PC imaging, deployment, migration and lifecycle management capabilities, Symantec said. Symantec recently released an update to Altiris Deployment Solution that includes support for the Ghost image format as a first step toward integrating these software management technologies, the company said. Symantec provides customers with a set of solutions to help reduce the cost and complexity of Windows Vista deployment, migration and management, the company added.

Symantec pcAnywhere is a remote control solution for IT support professionals looking to provide rapid and efficient service to the end user, Symantec said. Remote control features such as heterogeneous platform support and advanced security will bolster the Altiris endpoint management portfolio, the company said. The previous Altiris remote control technology, Altiris Carbon Copy Solution, will be discontinued in coming months, it said.

For customers of Symantec LiveState Delivery, Symantec is offering an easy migration path to the comprehensive endpoint lifecycle management of Altiris Client Management Suite, the company said.

To help customers realize these savings, increase endpoint security and maintain employee productivity, Symantec has released Altiris Privilege Management Essentials, which includes Altiris Application Control Solution and Altiris Local Security Solution, Symantec said. This new product bundle is an add-on to existing Altiris endpoint management suites, and delivers advanced control of end-user PC administrative rights and local password management, to reduce system vulnerability and calls to the service desk and to minimize software piracy and liability issues, the company said.

Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) believes that assuring IT values, such as security, compliance, governance and availability, requires a combination of systems management and risk mitigation. For some time, Symantec has aimed at supporting this convergence to reduce IT risk and manage IT complexity, EMA said.

Altiris Deployment Solution 6.8 sp2 is available through Altiris direct sales, VARs (value-added resellers), system integrators and OEM (original equipment manufacturers) partners, and is offered at a starting MSRP (manufacturers' suggested retail price) of US$ 47 per node, Symantec said. Altiris Privilege Management Essentials is also now available starting at an MSRP of US$ 25 per node, the company said.
